LONDON: On Thursday, former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz has opened her eyes for the first time in a month, as confirmed by Maryam and Hussain Nawaz.
The ailing wife of former premier Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had been unconscious after a heart attack earlier in June and was under medical observation at London’s Harley Clinic.
Maryam Nawaz requested for prayers in her tweet: “1st time in 30 days, Ami opened eyes for a few seconds. Don’t know if she saw or registered us. Still not conscious and on a ventilator. Prayers solicited”.
In a second tweet, Maryam said that her mother did not regain consciousness but just blinked her eyes.
“After exactly one month, she has opened her eyes. She looked around after opening her eyes,” Hussain Nawaz told reporters in London. He also added that “For some time her ventilator settings and sedatives were being reduced”.
In August 2017, Kulsoom Nawaz had also been diagnosed with throat cancer, more commonly known as lymphoma, after which she endured numerous chemotherapy sessions.
Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz arrived in London prior to Eid-ul-Fitr and are due to return to Pakistan on Friday, following the verdict handed out by the accountability court sentencing 10 and 7 years in jail to Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz respectively in the Avenfield properties case. Nawaz was also fined eight million pounds, where as Maryam was fined for a sum of two million pounds. Maryam’s husband, Capt. (retd) Safdar was sentenced to one year in jail and is currently imprisoned.
During a news conference on Thursday in London, Nawaz said that he wished to see his wife opening her eyes again and requested the nation to pray for her speedy and full recovery. He also took the opportunity to state that he was returning “despite seeing a prison cell in front”, yet he will return to Pakistan to “fulfill the promise of giving respect to the vote” and stressed that he would not abandon his nation regardless of whether he was taken to prison or the scaffold.
Speaking on Avenfield reference verdict, Sharif commented that it was clearly stated in the verdict that he had been absolved of corruption charges.
It is expected that Nawaz and Maryam will be arrested upon their arrival.
