LAHORE: Senior bureaucrat Fawad Hassan Fawad was arrested today by the NAB (national accountability bureau) in different corruption cases including the Ashiana housing scheme and award of contracts without going through a due course that resulted in huge losses to the exchequer.
Fawad who is said to be close to the former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif worked as chief secretary under the same.
NAB officials had earlier denied his arrest after he was summoned by them for questioning.
Director general NAB Lahore later explained that Fawad would be produced in front of an accountability court tomorrow for the purpose of obtaining physical remand and furthering the investigation.
The cases listed by NAB officials against the arrested included the award of Ashiana contracts to favorites, award of CNG stations in addition to working illegally in a private bank from 2005 to 2006.
Fawad was also accused of acquiring six mobile health units at higher than market rates while he was Provincial Health Secretary.
According to reports, the award for construction was awarded to Ch Latif and sons after they provided the lowest rates for the housing scheme. Fawad allegedly called the project director to his office intimidated him with allegations of corruption regarding the contract with the intention of canceling it and re-awarding the contract to Lahore casa Builders a proxy of Paragon City PVT Limited. Paragon is owned by the then Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique. Later the contract worth 14 billion rs was awarded to Casa builders.
