Nawaz sharif sentenced to 10 years in prison – Avenfield Reference, decision announced

While announcing the decision on Avenfield reference National Accountability Court has sentenced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to ten years in prison over corruption, while sentencing  Maryam Nawaz and Capt. Safdar to seven and one year respectively. The accountability Court has also imposed a fine of eight million Pound on former Prime minister. While his daughter Maryam has been handed over a fine of two million Pounds.

Nawaz Sharif had failed to justify before the court the means to acquire the Avenfield properties in London and thus was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Maryam has been sentenced to 7 years for abetment.

All the accused have been given a one year jail term for not cooperating with NAB including Captain Safdar. However the jail term announced for non cooperation will run concurrently.

The decision might turn out to be devastating for PMLN in the upcoming general election. According to Jahangir Khan Tareen a senior political leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said , it is a great victory for Pakistan, he added that Nawaz Sharif has been given an answer to his campaign question” Mujhay kiyon nikala” which is that he is a thief and and a money launderer.
